Church's Chapters

An immersive journey through the treasures of the brand, from 1873 to the present day.

For over one hundred and fifty years, Church’s has embodied the excellence of English shoemaking. Today, this remarkable heritage is celebrated through an archival project dedicated to retracing the brand’s craftsmanship, style and innovation across its long history. Photographed at the historic St James Road headquarters in Northampton—still home to Church’s production—the archive brings together both iconic and unexpected pieces, each recounting the evolution of the brand through objects that have quietly accompanied changing times and tastes.

Among the highlights are rare creations such as a delicate women’s leather shoe with hand-embroidered beadwork around 1900, a perforated suede Derby from 1922, and the iconic Consul, first developed in 1939 and permanently introduced in 1945. Alongside these appear historic catalogues—including the first, dated 1887—as well as original sketches, objects and documents tracing the evolution of Church’s visual and commercial identity. More than artefacts, they are enduring symbols of a tradition that continues to interpret and anticipate the language of style.
